If there is an msi file available then this is always the best option for use with Visio 2013, 2016, 2019 or 2021. An msi installer file will fully integrate the stencils and any templates within Visio. However, there are occasions where an msi file cannot be used e.g. in some work environments where there are restrictions on features being installed in this way. In this case you can download and install the zip file version. The stencils will not be fully integrated with Visio but will still be available from the Shapes menu.
For Visio 2003, 2007 or 2010 please download and use the ZIP file.

All our Visio shapes are designed to be used with any version of Visio from Visio 2003 onwards viz. Visio 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and Online Plan 2. Some shapes may work with Online Plan 1, but this version of Visio is very restricted in what shapes can be used.
VSS format files can be read by all versions of Visio
VSX format can also be read by all versions of Visio but can no longer be written in this format in Visio 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2021.
VSSX format files are the new format for Visio 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and Online Plan 2.

Visio 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and Online Plan 2: download and install the .msi file.
Visio 2003, 2007 and 2010: download the .zip file and use the .VSS format stencils.
Visio Online Plan 1: download the .zip file and use the .VSDX format files in the plan1 folder.

Various alternatives to Visio are able to use these shapes. Your application's instructions will tell you which file formats can be used. This will usually be the VSX file format but VSS and/or VSSX may be possible. You will need to download the zip files of these stencil formats.

LibreOffice Draw: Download the .zip file and open the .VSDX format files in the plan1 folder. You can select and copy the shapes from this document into your own document.

If the demo shapes are all you need then that is fine. Just use them!
